action

The film is set in Waxahachie , Texas in 1935 . Edna Spalding lives on a farm with her husband Royce. Royce, the local sheriff , was called one night about a black man who was rampaging and shot during the operation. From now on Edna is on her own: she has to look after her children Possum and Frank, but at the same time they have financial problems. Albert Denby, the banker , insists on repayment of the outstanding loan and advises Edna to sell the farm. The widow refuses, and the farm laborer Moses, who has taken her in, advises her to grow cotton . She follows his advice, and Denby also initially gives in, on the condition that Edna takes in his stepbrother, Mr. Will, who went blind in the First World War , and hires him. Will shows himself to be a skilled helper at an early age, but Edna continues to struggle with her financial difficulties.

Her sister Margret Lomax, who runs a beauty salon, and her husband are also unable to support her financially. She has a young daughter to look after and is confronted with the sexual antics of her husband Wayne and with her own poverty.

Reviews

"The drama is not free from romantic transfiguration, but behind the brilliant actors and beautiful pictures the universally transferable vision of an" emotional home "shines through, which arises from the interplay of unmistakable places, people and things."
