John "Johnny" Mantz (born September 18, 1918 in Hebron , Indiana , † October 25, 1972 in Ojai , California ) was an American racing driver .

Career

Johnny Mantz started once in his career in a race for the Formula 1 World Championship . He started on May 30, 1953 at the Indianapolis 500 - this race was part of the world championship between 1950 and 1960 - and reached 17th place. He had to share this place with his compatriot Walt Faulkner (driver changes were allowed at that time), whose Kurtis Kraft 500A- Offenhauser he took over after 76 laps (200 laps total distance).

Johnny Mantz competed in twelve NASCAR races between 1950 and 1956 . His only win was in his debut season at the first Southern 500 in Darlington .

Between 1948 and 1952 Mantz contested 17 races for the AAA championship (this is the predecessor series of the USAC championship). Here, too, he was able to achieve a victory.

Mantz died in a traffic accident in 1972.
