Studies and career

Jonas Kaufmann, Waldbühne Berlin, 2018

Jonas Kaufmann grew up with his older sister in Munich. After a few semesters of mathematics, he completed a course of studies, begun in 1989, at the Munich University of Music and Theater in 1994 with an exam as an opera and concert singer. Kaufmann then started at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken, where he worked from 1994 to 1996 and took over roles in the lyrical repertoire.

After this engagement he became freelance and has since worked at the opera stages Opéra National de Paris , La Monnaie in Brussels, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Salzburg Festival , Metropolitan Opera in New York, Royal Opera House London, Vienna State Opera , Deutsche Oper Berlin mainly in the lyrical, increasingly also in the youthful heroic subject. He is particularly connected to the opera houses in Zurich and Stuttgart .

In the 2006/2007 season he sang Don José in Bizet's Carmen at the Royal Opera House in London . In 2006 he sang Alfredo in Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata at the Metropolitan Opera. His role debut as Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca took place in May 2008 at the Royal Opera House in London.

His debut at the Bayreuth Festival was the title role in Wagner's Lohengrin in the production of Hans Neuenfels , conducted by Andris Nelsons on July 25, 2010 , after he was named Singer of the Year in the same role at the Bavarian State Opera in 2009, just like Anja Harteros as Elsa.

In addition to his operatic work, he also appears as a concert singer. He works with the accompanist Helmut Deutsch at song recitals .

In 2007, Kaufmann signed an exclusive contract with the DECCA (Universal Music) record company. His debut album Romantic Arias was released in 2008. On May 22, 2009, the second album Sehnsucht with a German repertoire was released. On September 13, 2013, the first album, The Verdi Album, was released by Sony Classical, with which Kaufmann has signed a long-term exclusive contract.

In June 2014 Kaufmann made his debut in the role of Chevalier Des Grieux in Giacomo Puccini's opera Manon Lescaut at the Royal Opera House in London alongside Kristīne Opolais as Manon. In November 2014, Kaufmann took on the same role in another production at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

At the side of Anja Harteros , he made his role debut in the spring of 2015 in the title role of Radamès in Giuseppe Verdi's Aida . On September 12 of the same year he performed at the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall , where he sang " Nessun dorma ", among other things . At the same time his Puccini album was released, which was his most successful album to date and reached number 22 in the charts, especially in Great Britain.

Recovered from a disease of the vocal cords that put him out of action for several months in 2016, Jonas Kaufmann made his comeback on January 18, 2017 at the Lohengrin premiere at the Opéra National de Paris. He then took on the title role in the opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano at the Bavarian State Opera , which premiered on March 12, 2017. He was accompanied by Anja Harteros (in her debut as Maddalena) and Luca Salsi (as Carlo Gérard ).

Kaufmann lived with his family near Munich. His divorced marriage with the singer Margarete Joswig has three children. His second wife is the director Christiane Lutz .
