Jonathan Goddard (born January / February 1617 in Chatham or Greenwich , † March 24, 1675 in London ) was an English doctor, member of parliament and professor. He was a founding member of the Royal Society .

Life

He was the son of Henry Goddard of a wealthy shipbuilder from Deptford. He received his schooling in Chatham with Mr. Chapman and Mr. Spencer and then private lessons with Mr. Dier. From 1632 he studied at Oxford University (Magdalen Hall) and from 1637 at Cambridge University (Christ's College) medicine (MB degree 1638). In 1643 he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MD of St. Catharine's College 1643, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians 1646) and looked after Charles I as a doctor when he was imprisoned by Parliament. In 1649/50 he was a doctor in the parliamentary army. In 1651 he became Warden of Merton College, Oxford, where he became a member of the Oxford Philosophical Club of John Wilkins , a forerunner of the Royal Society. In 1653 he was a representative of Oxford in the rump parliament . In 1655 he became professor of medicine at Gresham College , London. He was one of the five doctors who cared for Oliver Cromwell on his deathbed (with George Bate, Thomas Trapham, John Bathurst, Laurence Wright). When Charles II ascended the throne in 1660, he lost his post as Warden of Merton College, Oxford, but retained his professorship at Gresham College until his death. In 1660 he was a founding member of the Royal Society and on its council. When the Royal Society lost its premises in early 1661, they met in Goddard's offices at Gresham College.

He is said to be the first Englishman to develop and use a telescope.
