Jonathan "Jonny" Richard Guy Greenwood (born November 5, 1971 in Oxford , England ) is a British musician, film composer and member of the alternative rock band Radiohead .

To person

Jonny Greenwood is one of Radiohead's two guitarists . He also plays several other instruments . In cooperation with singer Thom Yorke , who is primarily responsible for melodies and lyrics, he is responsible for the multilayered arrangements and is therefore significantly involved in the creation of the Radiohead sound. His excessive playing style, rich in effects and memorable guitar solos, stands out on songs like Paranoid Android (by OK Computer ). A forearm bandage, with which he performed for several years, was the result of his sometimes wild style of play.

Live, Jonny always stands at the right edge of the stage (as seen by the audience), surrounded by a wall of effects units, synthesizers and various instruments. While the other band members usually limit themselves to one or two instruments, Jonny fills any gaps that arise in the process. During the recording of Kid A , he dealt with the Ondes Martenot , which is still instrumental in the sound of many Radiohead songs to this day.

The soundtrack to the documentary film Bodysong (2003; by director Simon Pummel) is often viewed as Jonny's solo album. It mainly consists of electronic sound experiments that hardly show any song structures. Another soundtrack by Greenwood for Paul Thomas Anderson's film There Will Be Blood was released in 2007 and won a Silver Bear at the 2008 Berlinale . For all of Anderson's subsequent films, Greenwood composed and arranged the film music. He was nominated for an Oscar 2018 for the music in Anderson's film The Silk Thread .

In 2015, Rolling Stone listed Greenwood as 48th of the 100 best guitarists of all time . In a list from 2003 he was ranked 60th.

Equipment

Jonny Greenwood has been playing a Fender Telecaster Plus since at least 1993 , to which he added a cut-off switch in collaboration with the Radiohead technician Plank, which gives him the option of interrupting the signal for a short time, creating a "stutter effect" , which you can hear for example in the solo by Paranoid Android . He also uses a Fender Starcaster .

He also uses a number of effects that fundamentally shape the Radiohead sound:

  • Electro Harmonix Small Clone ( Chorus )
  • DigiTech Whammy ( Pitchshifter )
  • Boss SD-1 (pitch shifting)
  • Marshall Shredmaster ( Distortion )
  • Boss RV-3 / RV-5 (Hall)
  • DOD 440 (envelope filter)
  • Demeter The Tremulator (Tremolo)
  • Boss RE-201 / RE-20 (Echo)
  • Max / MSP (software)

When it comes to the use of his amplifiers, Jonny Greenwood has been using a combination of the Vox AC 30 and the Fender Eighty-Five for years. All of its undistorted signals are played via the Vox AC 30 and its distorted signals via the Fender Eighty-Five. He uses a line selector to switch between the two amplifiers.

Greenwood also plays a number of keyboard instruments live:
