Pablo Honey is the British band Radiohead's debut album , released in the winter of 1993 . It contains the song Creep , which became the most famous piece of the band and ensured their rise. The album title comes from a sketch by the Jerky Boys in which a caller told his victim “ Pablo honey, please come to Florida! ”Exclaimed.

Emergence

The album was produced by Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade at Chipping Norton Studio in Oxon, England from September to November 1992 and mixed at Fort Apache Studios in Roxbury, Massachusetts, USA. Chris Blair's mastering took place at Abbey Road Studios in London, England. The finished album was released on February 22, 1993.

Reviews

Joseph Tate describes Pablo Honey in The music and art of Radiohead as the band's least individualistic album. It should be seen primarily as a musical answer to American grunge rock, which has shaped the mainstream since 1991. The New Musical Express called Pablo Honey “ one of those flawed but satisfying debuts that suggests Radiohead's talents will really blossom later on ” ( NME : “ one of those flawed but satisfying debuts that suggests that Radiohead's talents will really blossom later ”) ). Entertainment Weekly found a relationship to The Smiths , U2 and The Cure , while the American Rolling Stone made references to Morrissey , The Kinks and The Jam .

According to the All Music Guide , Pablo Honey's music is “ awkward collegiate pop ” ( Stephen Thomas Erlewine , German: “awkward, student pop”). Commercial win

The album was number 22 in the UK album charts in 1993, returned to the charts during the success of OK Computer and was there for a total of 60 weeks. It was granted platinum status in the UK and US.

Leaderboards

In 1993, Pablo Honey was ranked 35th in the NME's list of 50 best albums of the year. The readers of the British magazine Q voted the album in 1998 at 61st place on the list of the "best albums of all time". In the same year the album was in the list of "Virgin All-Time Top 1000 Albums" number 100. The Dutch radio Veronica put Pablo Honey at number 766 in a list of the 1,000 best albums of all time, in 2009 the album was at number 608.

On the US version of the album there is a bonus track with the radio version of Creep in which the line “so fucking special” has been changed to “so very special”.

Three singles were released from the album: Creep was released in September 1992, Anyone Can Play Guitar was released in February 1993, and Stop Whispering was released in October 1993.
