José is a chess front-end which is completely implemented in Java and thus runs platform-independent on different operating systems. It also offers chess database functions and is thus a free alternative to the established but proprietary products from ChessBase .

In addition to playing against various computer opponents, José also allows the analysis of chess positions and playing on a 3-dimensional game board.
