Josef Aust (born May 23, 1899 in Essen ; † October 16, 1973 in Essen- Werden ) was a German politician and member of the state parliament ( CDU ).

Life and work

The son of a building contractor completed a commercial apprenticeship after attending primary school . At the age of 14 he was in the Catholic youth movement and a union member since 1920. Later he was a lecturer at the Essen trade union seminar and at federal schools. From 1922 Aust was employed by the consumer association Wohlfahrt in Altenessen . In 1928 he was the cooperative secretary and in 1932 advertising manager and in 1946 executive board member. From 1948 Aust was a board member of the Central Association of German Consumer Cooperatives in Hamburg .

In addition, Aust was chairman of the supervisory board of the Essen-Nord housing association. In 1949 he became chairman of the Essen Catholic Committee. He was buried in the mountain cemetery in Essen- Fischlaken .

politics

He joined the German Center Party in 1925 and remained a member until it was dissolved in 1933. After 1945 he was a co-founder of the CDU district party in Essen and until 1946 deputy district party chairman. On February 6, 1946 he became a member of the appointed council of the city of Essen and its elected member from November 21, 1946. On October 19, 1950, he waived re-election.

After the Lord Mayor of Essen , Gustav Heinemann, resigned from this office because he was appointed Minister of Justice, Aust became mayor between August 1949 and the beginning of 1950. In December 1949, Hans Toussaint was elected to the office of Lord Mayor as Heinemann's successor.

Member of the state parliament

From July 5, 1950 to January 29, 1957, Aust was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia . He was elected directly in the constituency 064 Essen-Steele-Huttrop. In 1957 he renounced his mandate due to work stress. In 1960 he retired from public life for health reasons.

Honors

  • In 1949 Aust was awarded the papal order of Gregorius .
  • In 2016 the Josef-Aust-Weg in the new development area Grüne Harfe in Essen-Heidhausen was named after him. Aust last lived a few meters east of it on Bremer Strasse.
