meaning

Josef Dobrowsky was one of the most important Austrian artists of the interwar period. In his early work, influences from Gustav Klimt , Albin Egger-Lienz and Ferdinand Hodler can be seen , from 1920 onwards he dealt with the painting of Pieter Brueghel the Elder . At that time he therefore created landscapes and genre scenes in an earthy color scheme. Later he mainly created portraits and landscapes in an expressive colorism, including important watercolors . His pictures radiate a melancholy warm mood. The artist, who has not been adequately recognized up to now, has recently experienced increased interest, which is reflected in the rising prices of his pictures in the art trade.

From September 17, 2014 to January 18, 2015, a comprehensive exhibition of Dobrowsky's works took place in the Upper Belvedere in Vienna.
