Josef Schreiner (theologian)

Josef Schreiner (born April 14, 1922 in Windheim ; † May 2, 2002 in Würzburg ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian for Old Testament exegesis . He was rector of the University of Würzburg from 1973 to 1975.

Life

Josef Schreiner studied philosophy and theology in Würzburg . In 1953 he was with Joseph Ziegler with the work The Septuagint -Massora of the Book of Judges. A text-critical study on Dr. theol. PhD. From 1952 to 1955 he was an assistant at the theological faculty in Würzburg. In 1955 he went to the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome , where he obtained the degree of licentiate in biblical studies in 1956 with the work Das Deboralied in der Septuagint and then his habilitation thesis Sion-Jerusalem, Yahweh's royal seat. Theology of the Holy City in the Old Testament . With this thesis he received his habilitation in 1960 at the theological faculty in Würzburg. In 1962 he was appointed university lecturer.

On April 22, 1964, he was appointed full professor at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster and was appointed director of the seminar for contemporary biblical history. On April 1, 1970, he took over as successor to his teacher Joseph Ziegler Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Oriental languages at the University of Würzburg , where he in July 1990 emeritus was.

Josef Schreiner was also involved in academic self-government, in scientific bodies and church commissions. He was u. a. Vice-Rector (1971–1973), Rector (1973–1975) and Prorector (1975–1976) of the University of Würzburg. For several years he was chairman of the working group of German-speaking Catholic Old Testament scholars. In 1984 he was appointed a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission.

In 1984 he was appointed Knight of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien de Fürstenberg and invested on December 1, 1984 by Franz Cardinal Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy .
