Josefa "Putzi" Frandl , also: Josefin (e) Frandl , married Crotty (born July 5, 1930 in Mandling , Radstadt municipality , Land Salzburg ) is a former Austrian ski racer . It celebrated numerous victories in international races from the mid-1950s, won the silver medal in the giant slalom at the 1956 Winter Olympics , a total of three world championship medals and four Austrian championship titles . After the end of her active career in 1960, she moved to the United States, where she worked as a ski instructor into old age.

biography

Frandl skied for the first time as a two-year-old and received his first skiing lessons from her uncle, a ski instructor. After completing elementary school and secondary school , she completed an apprenticeship as a tailor , after having passed a journeyman's examination, she first worked as a tailor for alterations and later as a sporting goods seller in a sports store in Radstadt. Frandl belonged to the Radstadt ski club, was in the team of the Salzburg State Ski Association for some time and, after success in the junior sector, was accepted into the team of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) in 1950. Her first major successes came in the winter of 1951/1952 when she celebrated her first victory in an FIS race on the Tschagguns descent, alongside several podium places and her first of a total of six Salzburg state championship titles . After further podium places in the next two years, Frandl achieved the final breakthrough when she celebrated two important victories in the slalom of the Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel and in the combination of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains in winter 1954/1955 . She also won a giant slalom in Lermoos and was Austrian champion in giant slalom.

After a short injury break, the winter of 1955/1956 initially did not bring top results, but Frandl qualified for a major international event for the first time within the Austrian team, the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , which - as usual until 1980 - also served as world championships counted. In Cortina, Frandl won the silver medal in the giant slalom behind the German Ossi Reichert , was fifth in the slalom as well as in the three-way combination, which was only evaluated as a World Cup competition, and 13th in the downhill. After the games she won all the races in Zermatt . In the following winter of 1956/1957, Frandl celebrated several victories: She won the slalom of the Hahnenkamm races for the second time, won downhill, slalom and combined in Quebec, Canada , and was North American champion in the two-man combination downhill / slalom in Squaw Valley .

Frandl started the winter of 1957/1958 with two victories in the giant slalom in Saalfelden and the SDS races in Grindelwald , in which she had achieved three second places in the previous year. At her “home world championship” in Bad Gastein in 1958 , the Salzburg woman was one of the big medal candidates and she won the silver medal in slalom behind the Norwegian Inger Bjørnbakken in the very first competition . In the downhill she finished fifth, but in her previously strongest discipline, the giant slalom, she only finished eleventh, which was still enough for the bronze medal in the combination of three. Three weeks after the World Cup, Frandl became three-time Austrian champion in downhill, giant slalom and combined in Bad Hofgastein . A little later she won the slalom and combination of the Arlberg-Kandahar races in St. Anton as well as the descent and combination of the Holmenkollen-Kandahar races in Norway (descent in Voss , slalom on the Rødkleiva hill near Oslo ).

In the summer of 1958, Frandl completed a summer training session with the Austrian national team in Oregon in the United States . She then stayed in the USA for the entire winter of 1958/1959, only took part in races in North America and did not start in Europe. She won Downhill and Combined at the Harriman Cup at Sun Valley that winter and came second in Downhill and Combined in Aspen . In the winter of 1959/1960 Frandl returned to Europe to preserve her chance to participate in the 1960 Winter Olympics . She only competed in a few races in the run-up to the Games and, according to some coaches, did not have the required qualifications, but with her results in the ÖSV team she still achieved a starting place for the Olympics. At the games that were played in Squaw Valley in the United States, however, Frandl disappointed. She was only 16th in slalom, 21st in giant slalom and 39th downhill, thus 12th in the world championship combination. She celebrated her last victory at the subsequent North American races, in which she won the downhill race of the Harriman Cup for the second time and was second in the combined. After that, she ended her active career.

In 1961 Frandl finally moved to the United States and initially worked as a ski instructor in Aspen, where she met her future husband. The two married in 1965, had three children and after several relocations settled in Littleton, south of Denver in the US state of Colorado . Frandl-Crotty began playing tennis and was once a Colorado champion in her age group. She worked as a ski instructor at Copper Mountain until the winter of 2008/2009 before she broke her shoulder in 2009 and her husband passed away that same year. Frandl-Crotty repeatedly received guests from her old home in the USA, including many former and still active ski racers, but rarely traveled back to Austria herself. Her visit to Austria in 2001 on the occasion of her inclusion in the Radstadt "Walk of Sports" was her first home visit in over three decades.
