Joseph Schalk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Schalk (born March 24, 1857 in Vienna ; † November 7, 1900 there ) was an Austrian pianist .

Together with his brother Franz Schalk , he was a student of Anton Bruckner . He also became friends with the composer Hugo Wolf . He taught as a professor at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna .

Joseph Schalk is still known today as a piano arranger of the symphonies of his teacher Bruckner. He was able to achieve a greater degree of awareness for these works, but he often made strong, often distorting changes to them. Joseph Schalk was also significantly involved in the orchestral arrangements of the Bruckner symphonies by his brother or Ferdinand Löwe (which also destroyed the work structure of the compositions) .

In his will, Bruckner appointed Schalk as administrator of his scores. It is probably his fault that many sketches for the unfinished finale of the 9th Symphony were lost.
