The Journal of Ecology is an English-language journal on ecology published by the British Ecological Society .

The journal publishes articles on aspects of the ecology of plants and algae . In addition, topics about biogeochemistry , the ecology of microorganisms, climate change or symbioses are dealt with. Works that deal exclusively with cultivated plants or ecosystems in agriculture are not published. The Journal of Ecology also publishes the “Biological Flora of the British Isles”.

All editions since 1998 can be viewed online free of charge two years after their publication.

The 2012 Citation Report of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) ranked the Journal of Ecology 14th out of 136 journals in the ecology category and 11th out of 195 in plant sciences. Their impact factor was 5.431 in 2012.
