Joybrato Mukherjee (born September 29, 1973 ) is a German Anglist and has been President of the Justus Liebig University of Giessen (JLU) since 2009 . When he took office, he was the youngest university president in Germany. In June 2019 he was elected to the office of President of the German Academic Exchange Service , which he took up on January 1, 2020.

education

Born in Rhineland, Joybrato Mukherjee is the son of Indian immigrants. He studied English, biology and educational science at RWTH Aachen University and passed the first state examination and the master’s examination in 1997. After completing his preparatory service at grammar school, he passed the second state examination in 1999. He then took a doctoral degree at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn with a major in English Philology and minor subjects in genetics and educational science, which he successfully completed in 2000. He also completed his habilitation in Bonn and was awarded the Venia legendi for English Philology in 2003 .

In 2003 Joybrato Mukherjee was appointed to the professorship for English Linguistics at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. He conducts research on computer-aided corpus linguistics , applied linguistics , English syntax and variety linguistics . At the University of Giessen, he has been Principal Investigator of the International Graduate Center for the Study of Culture (GCSC), which was funded in both funding rounds between 2006 and 2019 by the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments. From 2011 to 2017 he was President of the International Computer Archive of Modern and Medieval English (ICAME), the most important and traditional corpus linguistic specialist organization.

From 2012 to 2019, Mukherjee was Vice President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Since January 1, 2020, he has held the office of President of the DAAD and thus heads the world's largest funding organization for the international exchange of students and scientists. From October 2016 to September 2018 he was speaker of the Conference of Hessian University Presidia. He is also a member of various advisory boards and boards of trustees.

Although he received several appointments, including chairs at the universities of Zurich and Salzburg, he stayed at JLU Giessen. In October 2012, Mukherjee was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Iași (USAMV) in Romania for his scientific merits and his contribution to deepening the good relations between the two universities . In March 2018 he also received an honorary doctorate from Tbilisi State University (TSU) in Georgia.

Mukherjee is a member of the SPD . At the suggestion of the SPD Hessen he was a member of the 14th Federal Assembly , which elected the Federal President on June 30, 2010.

University policy

Joybrato Mukherjee was Vice Dean of Faculty 05 “Language, Literature, Culture” at the University of Giessen from 2004 to 2008 and from 2005 and 2006 to 2008 he was also an elected member of the Senate and speaker of the list of professors “New University”. At the beginning of 2008 he was elected First Vice President of the JLU by a large majority. The expanded senate of the university elected Mukherjee on July 8, 2009 in the first ballot with 20 of 34 votes as the new president. He took up his post on December 16, 2009 as successor to Stefan Hormuth . On February 11, 2015, the University's extended Senate elected him in the first ballot with 27 of 34 votes for a second term of office until 2021. In February 2020, he announced that he would run for a third time.

The JLU Presidium, under the direction of Mukherjee, has been campaigning for the strengthening of basic funding for Hessian universities since 2009. Above all, he is committed to strengthening the cooperation between the various actors in the scientific community in terms of the regional network formation recommended by the Science Council.

In university medicine, Mukherjee works together with the JLU Presidium, especially against the background of the privatized University Clinic Gießen and Marburg , to secure research and teaching as well as a differentiated view of privatization. The JLU organized the XIII together with the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation. University symposium on the subject of "University medicine on the test bench" on February 20 and 21, 2019 in the Hessian state representation in Berlin. In particular, in addition to the requirements of increasing digitalization, the focus was on questions of the international competitiveness of Germany as a medical location.

Together with the JLU Presidium, he is pursuing a clear institutional internationalization strategy. During his presidency in 2010, JLU was one of the first pilot universities to take part in the "audit" internationalization of the university rectors' conference and was the first university nationwide to successfully go through the re-audit process. In 2016, on this basis, the JLU adopted its new internationalization strategy “Progress through internationalization - JLU International 2016–2026”.

For Mukherjee, the topic of equality is also part of the self-image of his university. In 2009, for example, the JLU implemented the research-oriented equality standards instrument of the German Research Foundation (DFG), which places JLU in the top group when it comes to implementing the standards. Until 2019 he was a member of the relevant DFG working group.

In June 2019 he was elected President of the German Academic Exchange Service . He took office on January 1, 2020 for a four-year term. At the beginning of his term of office, he formulated the “brand core” of the DAAD and thus the priorities for his work with the triad “Promote - Advice - Think”: In addition to promoting international academic exchange, the tasks of the DAAD as an advisory body for universities and politics as well as particularly important as a think tank for internationalization.
