Sabine Art, 2014

Sabine Eike Kunst (born December 30, 1954 in Wesselburen , Dithmarschen district ) is a German university professor and politician ( SPD ). From 2007 she was President of the University of Potsdam for four years and from February 23, 2011 to March 8, 2016, Minister for Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg . On January 19, 2016, she was elected President of the Humboldt University in Berlin and took up this position on May 11, 2016.

Life and career

During her studies 1972–1982 in Hanover , among other places , she studied chemistry , biology and philosophy in addition to hydraulic engineering and political science . In 1982 she became a Dr.-Ing. in the subject of environmental biotechnology , civil engineering and PhD in surveying. Eight years later, she received another doctorate to become Dr. phil. in political science, technology assessment and interdisciplinarity . Her habilitation also took place in 1990 in the field of civil engineering u. Surveying from the University of Hanover with a venia legendi for water and wastewater biology.

1979–1984 she worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Urban Water Management and Waste Technology at the University of Hanover. 1984–1985 art was a research assistant at the Central Institution for Further Education (ZEW) in Berlin. She took on teaching positions at the TH Darmstadt from 1985–1987. From 1986 to 1990 she was a full-time research assistant in the field of waste management at the Federal Environment Agency in Berlin. Art 1991–1994 was a substitute professor at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg . At the same time, she was a university professor at the University of Hanover from 1991–2007.

In the university self-administration, Kunst took on the duties of Director of International Affairs at the University of Hanover from 2003-2005 . She was managing director of the advanced training WBBau at the University of Hanover from 2004 to 2007. She was elected Vice President for Teaching, Studies, Continuing Education and International Affairs at the University of Hanover from 2005–2007.

On July 20, 2006, the eleven-member Senate of the University of Potsdam unanimously elected Sabine Kunst as the new President of the University. She took office on January 1, 2007 for a six-year term ending December 31, 2012. The then 55-year-old was elected on June 30, 2010 in Bonn by the general assembly of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with a large majority and took up this honorary position the next day on July 1. Art was the first woman to head the DAAD.

Art gained international experience, among other things, in 1985 during a research stay in Guangzhou , China, on the commissioning of biogas plants. 1986–1989 she cooperated with the Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in Bolivia and Peru . In La Paz , the seat of government in Bolivia, the engineer took care of the construction of ponds in slum areas. Until 2007 she pursued various projects in international research in South Africa , Mexico , Costa Rica , Brazil and Siberia on the resource water .

In 2010, Kunst applied for the office of President of the University of Leipzig , but failed in the first ballot. At the same time she was awarded the “University Manager of the Year” award by the Center for University Development and the Financial Times Deutschland .

On February 23, 2011, Kunst succeeded Martina Münch (SPD) as Brandenburg Minister for Science, Research and Culture in the Platzeck III / Woidke I cabinet . She had previously given up her position as President of the University of Potsdam, as well as her honorary position as DAAD President. In the new edition of the red-red coalition from November 5, 2014 as Kabinett Woidke II , art kept its ministerial post . In December 2014 she joined the SPD.

In December 2015, art was proposed as the only candidate by the Board of Trustees of the Humboldt University in Berlin for the office of university president and was elected on January 19, 2016. In her first term of office she came under strong criticism because of her dealings with the controversial, right-wing historian Jörg Baberowski and a lawsuit against the Humboldt University's own student representatives. Kunst is married, has lived in Werder (Havel) since 2007 and has three grown children. Art has six siblings. Kirsten Fehrs , the bishop of the north church in the Hamburg and Lübeck districts, is her sister.

Awards

• In 2010, the Financial Times Deutschland and the Center for University Development , which is closely related to the Bertelsmann Foundation , awarded her the prize for "University Manager of the Year 2010"
