Julian Schmid (born September 1, 1999 ) is a German Nordic combined athlete .

Career

Schmid starts for SC Oberstdorf , where he was trained by Thomas Müller for a long time . He completed his first international competitions at the Nordic Ski Games of the OPA 2014 in Gérardmer, France . He took fourth place in the Gundersen competition for students from the Mittelschanze and over 4 km. In the following years Schmid competed regularly in the Alpine Cup , but only rarely found himself in the top 20. In the junior competition of the OPA Games 2016 , Schmid did not get past 16th place either. Together with Simon Hüttel , Niclas Heumann and Tim Kopp , he won the silver medal in the team competition.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 Alpine Cup season, Schmid finished eighth in Winterberg and thus achieved a place in the top ten for the first time. At the German Championships in Nordic Combined in 2016 , he came third among the juniors. In January 2017, he then celebrated his Continental Cup debut , but missed the points in both Otepää and Eisenerz , so that he was downgraded to the Alpine Cup again. Schmid did not score his first points in the Continental Cup until December 16, 2017 in Steamboat Springs . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2018 in Kandersteg , Schmid only competed in the team competition, which he finished in second place together with Tim Kopp, Luis Lehnert and Constantin Schnurr .

The good results in summer 2018, in which he scored his first points in the Grand Prix , was followed by an equally good start to the 2018/19 Continental Cup season . After he reached the podium twice in Park City , Schmid was appointed to the national team in the World Cup . On his debut in Otepää, he jumped straight into the points with 26th place. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2019 in Lahti , Schmid was in top form and won the sprint competition. He was also able to win the gold medal in a team with Luis Lehnert, Simon Hüttel and David Mach . Only in the individual competition over 10 km he had to admit defeat to the Austrian Johannes Lamparter . In the following two weeks Schmid was again part of the World Cup team, where he was able to collect World Cup points on all three competition days. At the Gundersen competition in Lahti from the Salpausselkä large hill and over 10 km, Schmid achieved his best World Cup result of the season with 15th place.

In May, the DSV announced when it published its squad for the coming season that Schmid had been nominated for level 1a and thus for the national squad. He was able to live up to this vote of confidence in the 2019 Grand Prix . Schmid completed a number of good competitions, including sixth place in Oberhof at the beginning of September . He confirmed this performance at the German Championships in Klingenthal and Johanngeorgenstadt . While he narrowly missed the podium in the individual, he and Johannes Rydzek won his first medal at senior level in third in the team sprint. As the reigning junior world champion, Schmid was guaranteed a place in the World Cup team at the start of the winter in Ruka . After he narrowly missed the points, he showed his potential with the ranks 14 and 16. With further good appearances in Lillehammer , he solidified his position in the German World Cup team, although his mileage can still be improved.

Personal

Schmid, who grew up with two older brothers - Robin and Patrick - is the only competitive athlete in the family. He got into cross-country skiing through Andreas Bauer's son, who is his friend . Schmid started jumping training at the age of seven.
