Julie Moss (born October 15, 1958 ) is a former American triathlete .

Career

Runner-up at the Ironman Hawaii 1982

Julie Moss achieved international fame when she collapsed dehydrated while in the lead in the Ironman competition in Hawaii in 1982 shortly before the finish and crossed the finish line on all fours in second place behind Kathleen McCartney . This scene was broadcast live worldwide and has inspired many athletes to take part in the Ironman competition, including her future husband, Mark Allen .

The newspaper taz wrote about her:

"The stumbling Julie Moss became a symbol of a sport that more than any other physical exercise before her forces people to their limits - and sometimes beyond."

After her second place at the Triathlon International de Nice in September 1984, the unofficial triathlon professional world championship over 4 km swimming, 120 km cycling and 30 km running in Nice behind her compatriot Colleen Cannon , Julie Moss became the Cologne Triathlon a week later , the Cup de Cologne short triathlon at Fühlinger See , which she was able to finish victoriously. This made Julie Moss the first US triathlete in 1984 to take part in a triathlon in Germany and win it.

In October 1997 she declared her active time over after her start in Kona. 30 years later they started again in 2012 with Kathleen McCartney Hearst in Hawaii and finished 27th in the age group 50–54.

In 2017, the 58-year-old (just one day before her 59th birthday) started again in Hawaii 35 years after her greatest success, but could not finish the race on October 14th. In 2018 she took third place in the age group 60-64.

Julie Moss and Mark Allen were married for twelve years but are now divorced. Her son Mats Allen is also active as a triathlete - in September 2017 he finished third in the Ironman Korea when he first started the long distance .
