Julio Antonio Vásquez

Julio Antonio Vásquez Arriagada (* 1897 , according to other information May 22, 1900 in Santiago de Chile , † 1976 ibid) was a Chilean sculptor .

From 1916 Vásquez studied painting and sculpture at the Escuela de Bellas Artes with Virginio Arias and Simón González and then taught at the Liceo de Niñas and the Instituto Superior de Comercio in Valparaíso. As a member of the Generación del Veintiocho group , he traveled to France in 1929 on a grant from the Chilean government to study art education. He took lessons from Ernst Barlach in Berlin and from Antoine Bourdelle in Paris .

From 1932 to 1966 Vásquez was Professor of Sculpture at the Escuela de Bellas Artes of the Universidad de Chile and in this role shaped several generations of young Chilean sculptors, including Marta Colvin , Sergio Castillo Mandiola , María Fuentealba , Raúl Valdivieso , Matías Vial , Ricardo Mesa , Isabel Sotomayor , Juana Müller , Alfonsina Moreno and Alicia Blanche . He was also one of the founders of the Asociación Chilena de Pintores y Escultores , of which he became president.
