Julius Kohte

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Julius Eduard Alexander Kohte (born November 13, 1861 in Berlin ; † November 14, 1945 in Mitwitz ) was the conservator for art monuments in the Prussian provinces of Posen and Brandenburg and a private lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin .

Life

After completing his studies, Kohte was able to clarify the then controversial building history of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan with a one-year research grant from the Boissonet Foundation of what is now the Technical University of Berlin in 1888/89 . He then worked as a government building manager and master builder in Berlin , Koblenz and Magdeburg . In 1891 he was commissioned to record the art monuments of the Poznan Province. This task resulted in the four-volume directory on the art monuments of the province of Poznan, which was published from 1896 to 1898. After participating in excavations in Magnesia in Asia Minor - he prepared the excavation report and publication - Kohte completed his habilitation in 1903 at the Technical University of Charlottenburg . Between 1904 and 1924 he was a member of the State Building and Finance Directorate.

Kohte advocated that houses threatened by demolition in Berlin were photographed at the beginning of the 20th century. At his request on February 11, 1907, the Berlin Architects' Association made 1000 marks available for this purpose from the funds of the Springer Foundation. As a result, many buildings were photographed between 1907 and 1914, 186 photos are now in the Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Berlin .

At the beginning of 1921, a department for the preservation of monuments was set up in Greater Berlin , and Julius Kohte was appointed to manage it. The department encompassed both the preservation of monuments and homeland security in general as well as the administration of buildings and works of art in state ownership, which were to be understood as art monuments in the narrower sense. 1924-1935 he was given the post of curator for the art monuments of the province of Pomerania.

From 1903 to 1927 Kohte was a private lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin or its predecessor at the Royal Technical University in Charlottenburg , where he taught the history of architecture .
