The Jungnamensand is a small sandbank in the German Bight west of the island of Amrum in the coastal sea of Schleswig-Holstein .

geography

The Jungnamensand lies 2.4 km west of the Kniepsand or 3.2 km west of the western tip of the Schleswig-Holstein island of Amrum. The area that is dry during floods is roughly circular with a diameter of 400 meters, which corresponds to an area of about 13 hectares . Since the area is usually not flooded, it is high sand .

To the north of the sand bank, towards Sylt , there are two smaller seal banks, Hörnumknob and Theeknob .

natural reserve

The Jungnamensand is part of protection zone 1 (core zone) of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and is registered as an FFH and bird sanctuary as part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas and is therefore closed to people. The Jungnamensand is the only gray seal rearing area in Germany , along with the Helgoland dune and the Kachelotplate near Juist . It is also a refuge for numerous bird species.

In January and December, after storm surges, young gray seals are occasionally driven from Jungnamensand to Kniepsand , to Amrum, Föhr or Hörnum Odde on Sylt, where they are cared for by the mother animals.

Others

Several holiday homes and apartments in Amrum are named after the boy named sand.
