Justin Matherly

Justin Matherly (* 1972 in West Islip , New York ) is an American sculptor .

life and work

Matherly studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts until 2000 , at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia until 2002 and then at Hunter College in New York. In 2007 he completed his studies with a master's degree .

The starting point for Matherly's sculptures are often photos from books, which are translated into drawings and serve as a template for the casting mold. He is particularly attracted to Greek and Roman statues, such as the torso of the Belvedere , which is attributed to the sculptor Apollonios of Athens .

Concrete is the material from which Justin Matherly casts his massive works. His oversized objects are often presented on medical walking aids .

Justin Matherly is represented by the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York and Galerie Eva Presenhuber in Zurich.
