Kálmán Mészöly (born July 16, 1941 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian football player and coach. He played his entire career at Vasas SC and was one of the most important performers of his team in their strongest club phase. When playing as a player, he was nicknamed The Blonde Rock because of his good defensive work and his blond hair . After his football career he worked as a coach for two decades, u. a. in his native Hungary and Turkey .

Player career

society

Mészöly began his club career in 1952 in the junior department of III. Kerületi DO . From here he moved in 1959 to the top Budapest club Vasas SC . Here he quickly established himself as a top performer and played continuously until 1971. During this time Mészölys was one of the dominant clubs in Hungarian football. Mészöly and his team won the Hungarian Championship in the 1960/61, 1961/62, 1964/65 and 1965/66 seasons . In addition, the Mitropa Cup was won four times during Mészöly's time .

In the summer of 1972 Mészöly finally ended his career at Vasas SC.

National team

Mészöly played for the Hungarian national team for a decade . With her he took part in the football world championships in 1962 , 1966 and the European football championship in 1964 . While he survived the group phase with his team in the world championships, he was eliminated with her both times in the quarter-finals. At the European Championships he made it with his team to the semi-finals. Here Mészöly's team lost after extra time to the eventual tournament winner Spain with 1: 2 after extra time. In the game for third place, Hungary finally defeated Denmark 3-1 after extra time.

Mészöly made a total of 61 international matches for his country, scoring six goals.

Coaching career

Mészöly began to work as a coach after his football career. After taking care of the clubs Ganz-Mávag SE , Budafoki MTE and Békéscsaba 1912 Előre SE as head coach, in the summer of 1978 he took over his former club Vasas SC as head coach. After coaching this club for two years, he became the national coach of the Hungarian national team in 1980 . He led them to the 1982 World Cup and coached them for another year after the World Cup. He then returned to Vasas SC in the summer of 1983.

In May 1985 Mészöly was introduced as the new head coach of the Turkish national team and only looked after them in two international matches.

After his brief stint as Turkish national coach, Mészöly took over from Todor Veselinović with the new Turkish champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul . With this club he was the first to win the pre-season TSYD Istanbul Cup . Under Mészöly, Fenerbahçe met the reigning French champion Girondins Bordeaux in the European Cup of National Champions of the 1985/86 season . Against this club, which had reigning European champions like Alain Giresse and Patrick Battiston , Jean Tigana in its ranks and was French champion twice in a row, Fenerbahçe was treated as a blatant outsider and the club were given little chance of advancing. At that time, the relationship between Turkey and France was very tense because of the attacks by the Asala terrorist organization . Furthermore, the Turkish teams were eliminated without exception in the European club cup competitions in the first round. In the first game, played on September 1, 1985 in Bordeaux , Fenerbahçe created a big surprise and defeated Girondins 3-2 away. After this victory, Mészöly and the entire team were celebrated as a hero by the Turkish trade press. In the second leg, Mészöly's team earned a 0-0 draw and prevailed against Girondins. This advancement was celebrated as a great success in Turkish football at the time. In the second round, the team met IFK Göteborg . In the first away game, Fenerbahçe lost 4-0. After Mészöly had no chance with the otherwise successful club in the championship and had also missed out in the other national competitions, the club management replaced him at the end of the season by Branko Stanković . Mészöly continued his career in Turkey and took over the league rivals Altay Izmir for the new season . Altay dismissed Mészöly after eight match days.

After two years in Turkey, Mészöly stayed without coaching until 1988 and then took over Vasas SC for the third time. The following years he coached Vasas again and twice for the Hungarian national team. In the 1991/92 season he also coached the Saudi Arabian football club Ittihad FC .
