The Carinthian State Library is a public scientific regional library of the State of Carinthia with its seat (since 1884) in the Rudolfinum of the Carinthian state capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee .

History, stocks, operation

The holdings of the library go back to the former collections of the founding: Historischer Verein für Kärnten (1844), Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein für Kärnten (1848), Kärntner Heimatmuseum (1925) and several legacies. In 1845, the systematic book purchase and public business began at its headquarters in Landhaus Klagenfurt . In 1846 the collection comprised 1525 volumes. In 1847 the first director of the historical association, Gottlieb von Ankershofen (1795–1860), made important books from his private collection available. In 1867, 3433 works formed the inventory that was reorganized in the same year. The alphabetical catalog was completed in 1874, and in 1884 it was moved to the State Museum Rudolfinum. After cataloging again in 1889 by the archivist August von Jaksch (1859–1932), a three-volume nominal catalog and a subject catalog comprising 22 main departments were available in 1890 . During the two world wars, the number of purchases had to be greatly reduced. In 1951, the library left by Eduard Gaston Pöttickh von Pettenegg (1847–1918) was taken over from the holdings of the Carinthian State Archives and incorporated.

As an institution of the state, the library has existed since the handover of the collections with 13,965 works to the Reichsgau Carinthia in 1942, but in the sense of a library of the entire inventory only since 1950 or 1974. As a department of the State Museum for Carinthia, it was like this with effect from 1 January 1999 outsourced from the state administration. Special emphasis is placed on the collection of the Carinthiaca , i.e. the literature from and about Carinthia including (otherwise only limited) fine literature .

The library's holdings include over 140,000 media items, including 22 incunabula , old atlases and around 2,000 maps, works from the early days of Carinthian printing history, first editions, rare illustrated books, etc. The so-called sixth German Bible Biblia is an extremely valuable, rare treasure . German, printed in 1477 by Günther Zainer in Augsburg. There are around 40 copies of this pre-Lutheran German Bible edition worldwide, four of them in Austria. There are also around 40,000 photographs and over 1,800 party papers .

Housed in the main building of the State Museum, the library occupies parts of the ground floor in the north wing and several cellars below. In 1993 the inner courtyard of the State Museum was expanded and on January 28, 1994, a new reading room with twelve places was moved into.

On May 1, 2002, new, contemporary library regulations came into force, replacing those of February 22, 1994. In April 2002, the conventional catalog was converted to an online version, and since May 2002 the Carinthian regional library has been part of the Austrian library network .

From December 2012, the Carinthian State Museum had to move its mold- infested depot objects from the basement of the main building that was in need of renovation to a replacement quarter, including works from the regional library that were three to five hundred years old. With regard to a possible permanent outsourcing of all library artefacts , a sustainable solution was envisaged at the beginning of July 2013 (when the facility was closed) .

In October 2019, the new collection and science center was opened as the new headquarters of the State Museum, with an area of 12,000 m² in the south of Klagenfurt.
