The Royal Order of Cambodia ( French Ordre Royal de Cambodge ) was founded on February 8, 1864 by King Norodom I of Cambodia as an award for military and civil merit. On May 10, 1896, the order was adopted as a so-called colonial order in the French order system. Due to the independence aspirations of Cambodia, the French possessed President Vincent Auriol by decree on 25 August 1948, the deletion of a French Order. Since then, the Royal Order of Cambodia, with the interruption of the reign of the Khmer Rouge (1975 to 1979), has been the country's highest honor.

Order classes

The order consists of five classes

After the acceptance into the French order system, conditions were attached to the award of the order. According to this, the person to be honored had to be able to prove that they had worked for at least three years in Indochina , or had made special contributions to this colony in metropolitan France.

On July 14, 1933, the statutes were changed so that to be awarded the age of 29 and a minimum of nine years of colonial service had to be proven.

Order decoration

The sign of the order is an eight-pointed gold star that hangs on a royal crown. The stylized insignia of the kingdom can be seen in the high oval blue enameled medallion in the middle, which is surrounded by a gold-framed garnet-red ring .

The knight's medal is made of silver .

Carrying method

The Grand Cross is worn on a sash from the right shoulder to the left hip and with an enlarged order symbol as a breast star . Grand officer and commander decorate the award as a neck medal , grand officers additionally with a breast star. Officers and knights wear the award on the ribbon on the left side of the chest. Officers additionally with a rosette on the ribbon.

The ribbon was originally red with green stripes. Since the resemblance to the red ribbon of the Legion of Honor was too great, it was decided in 1898 to use a white ribbon with orange stripes. Since 1948 the order has been awarded and worn again on the original ribbon.
