kuk bodyguard rider squadron

The kuk Leibgardereitereskadron was one of a total of five guard units at the court of the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary until 1918 . With a strength of 150 officers and men, as well as 80 horses, the task at hand roughly corresponded to the body gendarmerie of the German emperor .

The Kuk Leibgardereitereskadron was set up with a cabinet letter of September 24, 1849 as a guard gendarmerie with a strength of 77 men and on September 18, 1868 renamed the Leibgardereitereskadron. Your captain was the 1st adjutant general . The main task of the unit made up of sergeants was the orderly service for the emperor and the military chancellery. The squadron was also used for courier trips. The quarters were the Lechenfeld barracks .

In contrast to the Arcièren Life Guard and the ku Life Guard, the Kuk Life Guard Rider Squadron was not a pure officer guard , but consisted of non-commissioned officer ranks of the Common Army in the lower ranks .

Parade adjustment

The Para Dead adjustment for teams consisted of spiked helmet with Roßhaarbusch, Rock (Felber fur coat), epaulets , cartridge , white hirschlederner breeches , high riding boots , Anschnallsporen , Stulphandschuhen, cavalry saber with dome and Portepee , cloak. This uniform was mainly worn for court services, court ceremonies and orderly services in troop parades .

Officers carried as para Dead adjustment, the spiked helmet with Roßhaarbusch, Rock (Felber fur coat), axillary line, epaulette, cartridge white hirschlederner breeches, high riding boots, Anschnallsporen, Stulphandschuhe, Kavalleriesäbel with dome and Portepee, sash and cloak. This uniform was mandatory for court service, court audiences and court events.

Adjustment of duties for teams (first variant)

Spiked cap with horsehair bush, skirt (faux fur skirt), epaulettes, cartridge, boot pants, high riding boots, buckle spurs, gloves, cavalry saber with dome and portepee. This variant was prescribed for service as a watch commander in the Vienna Hofburg (in winter with a fur coat), and for the post in front of the Sr. Majesty's chamber (in winter with a bicycle coat). In addition, this variant was worn by the ordinaries of the First Supreme Court Master in Budapest and the adjutants general in Vienna and Budapest.

Adjustment of duties for staff officers and senior officers (first variant)

Spiked bonnet without horsehair bush, skirt (fur coat only on command), epaulettes, cartouche, gray buckskin boot pants, high riding boots, buckle spurs, gauntlet gloves, cavalry saber with dome and portepee, field armband and cycling coat. To be worn when deploying to accompany the emperor and king during field maneuvers, troop inspections and alarms during marches and in the field.

Adjustment of duties for staff and senior officers (second variant)

Pickelhaube with horsehair bush, skirt (faux fur skirt), pantaloons, ankle boots with spurs, gloves, cavalry saber with dome and portepee, field bandage and cycling coat. This adjustment had to be worn on all business occasions for which the other variants were not prescribed. In rainy weather the cycling coat was to be worn, in winter the frock coat over the tunic.

Museum reception

The very glamorous and correspondingly complex adjustments of the guards are exhibited in the Army History Museum in Vienna. On display are outfits of the kuk Leibgardereitereskadron, kk First Arcièren-Leibgarde , ku Leibgarde and the kuk Trabantenleibgarde .
