Corps areas and supplementary districts (1894)

Naming problem

The place names used by the kuk military administration are used here. This leads to a certain problem, since in the so-called Transleithanic half of the empire (all Hungarian areas and areas claimed by Hungary), as a rule, Hungarian names were rigorously enforced for localities, regardless of the customary name. (This is how Slovakia was referred to as Upper Hungary, with the consequences mentioned.)

In reality it happened that cities in the Hungarian claim area had three names at the same time - Sibiu / Nagyszeben / Hermannstadt or Prešporok / Pozsony / Preßburg, because the Austrian imperial administration also had German names. In the Cisleithan half of the empire things were a little different, many Polish and Galician names were retained, with the exception of the places that had had a German name for centuries (Krakow).

In Bohemia, too, the original names were often retained in the Czech-speaking areas (Jičín). The names of the formerly Venetian areas on the Mediterranean had also kept their Italian names (Castelnuovo, now Herceg Novi).

Ultimately, however, the settlement with Hungary concluded in 1867 did not require any change in the place names in the respective halves of the empire. As far as possible, the names given are linked to today's conditions.
