Kai Joachim Nürnberger (born June 7, 1966 in Wolfenbüttel ) is a former German national basketball player . The Point Guard's greatest success was winning the European Championship in 1993.
Player career
youth
Kai Nürnberger started playing basketball at the age of six. His mother was a basketball player and his father, Klaus Nürnberger, was a trainer in Wolfenbüttel. In 1984, at the age of 17, he went to the United States to complete his training as a basketball player at Southern Illinois University in the NCAA college league .
societies
After returning from the USA, he played in the Bundesliga from 1989, first with Galatasaray Cologne , then with Steiner Bayreuth . In 1991 he moved to TTL universa Bamberg for eight seasons .
From 1999 he was a high performer at the newly founded Skyliners in Frankfurt . Until 2003, his playing time continued to decrease, until the younger Pascal Roller was finally given preference as playmaker.
The following season he played in the 2nd Bundesliga South at TSV Tröster Breitengüßbach , where he finally resigned because he no longer met his own standards.
Nürnberger's strengths on the field included preparing his teammates to finish the basket, having a good overview of the game, changing pace and having the courage to seize the action at crucial moments and thus score important points. He recorded a total of 5247 points in the Bundesliga, which was more at the end of his career than any other German playmaker in the league had previously achieved.
National team
Nürnberger played in the German national team for 14 years. His first game was on May 19, 1985 in Stuttgart against Italy, his last on July 3, 1999 at the European Championships in Paris against Turkey . He played a total of 136 international matches for Germany and scored 909 points. In the closing stages of the 1993 European Championship final against Russia, he played a key role in the Germans winning gold by scoring five points in the last three minutes and thus equalizing his team behind. Six seconds before the end he put Christian Welp under the basket with a pass , who dunked after Nürnberger's pass, was fouled and then converted the profitable free throw.
In 1989 he won bronze at the Universiade in Duisburg with the German student selection.
