Kara Ben Nemsi Effendi is a 26-part television series based on the first six oriental novels by Karl May , which was broadcast by ZDF in 1973 and 1975 .

background

At the beginning of 1972, television dared to film Karl May novels for the first time, namely Through the Desert , Through Wild Kurdistan , From Baghdad to Stambul , In the Gorges of the Balkans , Through the Land of the Skipetars and Der Schut .

The main role of Kara Ben Nemsi was played by Karl-Michael Vogler . Hajji Halef Omar was played by Heinz Schubert . The direction was directed by Karl May expert Günter Gräwert , who also wrote the screenplay, the music is by Martin Böttcher and the camera was directed by Horst Schier . The series consists of two seasons of 13 episodes each. In contrast to the Karl May films of the 1960s, the implementation was closer to the novel. The series was produced by the Munich-based film production company Elan-Film Max Gierke & Co.

The budget of the first season, which was filmed from August to September 1972 in the Carpathian Mountains and on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast near Varna and from October to November 1972 in the oases of Nefta and Tozeur and in Bizerte in Tunisia , was DM 1.7 million After long negotiations, one of the mosques in Nefta was even allowed to be converted into a film studio.

The reviews and audience response were not very encouraging at first. In general, the productions were criticized for being too text-heavy, offering too little action and not being too complex. But the audience rating gradually rose from a moderate 12 percent to 21 percent. So they started to prepare a second season.

The second season was not filmed in Yugoslavia , as originally planned, for cost reasons , but from June to August 1974 in the area around Almería in Andalusia in southern Spain , the budget exceeded 2.5 million DM. This virtually missed the opportunity to adapt the action Record “original locations”, as Artur Brauner had done ten years earlier for his feature film Der Schut .

The slow pace and the lack of tension were also criticized in the episodes of the second season. But it was also praised , among other things, in a letter to the reader from TV Hören undsehen, the renunciation of exaggerated brutalities and the floral language of Hajji Halef Omar. Nevertheless, the ZDF decided not to continue the series. The reason given was the high production costs for an evening program with relatively modest success.

The second season was also broadcast in Austria in autumn 1975, and again on 3sat in the Karl May year of 1992 .
