Life

"Phoenix from the Ashes" from 1959 in Braunschweig

Meyer studied at the Braunschweiger Werkkunstschule, which is now the College of Fine Arts , where he taught freehand drawing from 1956 to 1959, and from 1959 to 1966 he taught at the Werkkunstschule in Wiesbaden. From 1966 he taught at the Werkkunstschule Bielefeld and later he was professor in the design department and from 1978 to 1993 dean at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences . He later lived in Wiesbaden .

On February 21, 1954, Meyer was the first recipient of the Rudolf Wilke Prize awarded by the city of Braunschweig since that year .

The relief picture Phoenix from the ashes on the back wall of the former administrative court, designed by Meyer, commemorates the destruction of the city of Braunschweig in the Second World War and the subsequent reconstruction. However, this symbolism cannot be seen without an explanatory notice board. Therefore, the Braunschweig City Center District Council suggested putting up a memorial plaque.

Meyer worked as an illustrator for the 1955 edition of Ina Seidel's “The Lost Garden”.
