The Karl Jaspers Prize is usually awarded every three years by the City of Heidelberg , the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and the University of Heidelberg . It was donated in 1983 on the occasion of Karl Jaspers' 100th birthday and was endowed with prize money of 5000 euros. Initially awarded by the city and university alone, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences was added in 2013 as the third donor and the prize money was increased to 25,000 euros.

The selection committee consists of the rector of the university, two personalities elected by the city council, one member each from the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and the Heidelberg-based Max Planck Institute, the rector of the University of Jewish Studies and the chairman of Karl Jaspers Foundation in Basel.
