Karl Breidenstein

Karl Breidenstein (born October 18, 1871 in Frankfurt am Main ; † July 12, 1966 there ) was a German organist , university professor and composer .

Life

Breidenstein's father was the organist at the Frankfurter Weißfrauenkirche Karl Breidenstein (1830-1897). The son attended the Klinger secondary school and studied from 1888 to 1893 at the Dr. Hoch Conservatory . From 1894 he taught harmony , counterpoint , score playing and organ at this institute . His students included Paul Hindemith , Siegfried Würzburger and Kurt Hessenberg .

From 1897 until it was destroyed on March 22, 1944 , Breidenstein was the organist of the Katharinenkirche in Frankfurt . He then remained in office until 1954 and accompanied the church service in the parish hall on a harmonium . In the dedication service of the rebuilt church on October 24, 1954, he played the new Walcker organ; Among other things he played a chorale fantasy by Michael Praetorius and a toccata by Girolamo Frescobaldi . His successor as organist and cantor at the Katharinenkirche was Ingrid Stieber (1918–2005) in 1954 .
