Karl Friedrich Christian Brugman ( born March 16, 1849 in Wiesbaden , † June 29, 1919 in Leipzig ) was a German Indo-Europeanist and linguist .

Brugmann was born the son of a treasury director.

From 1867 to 1871 Brugmann studied in Halle (Saale) and Leipzig. He received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1871 and passed the state examination there in 1872. His teacher was Georg Curtius . This was followed by a time in school service in Wiesbaden and at the Nikolaischule in Leipzig. In 1877 he received his habilitation in Leipzig . In 1882 he became associate professor in Leipzig and in 1884 full professor for comparative linguistics in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1887 he followed a call to Leipzig, where he taught Indo-European linguistics and worked extremely productively for 32 years.

Brugmann represented the principle of the absence of exception of the sound laws and is one of the most important young grammarians alongside August Leskien .

In 1882 he married a daughter of the Privy Councilor of Justice Friedrich Berner and had four children. Major General a. D. Gerhard Brugmann is a grandson of the scientist.
