Karl Fröhlich (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Hermann Fröhlich (born April 8, 1821 in Stralsund , † December 18, 1898 in Berlin ) was a German poet and silhouette cutter who was known for his cut-out drawings in German children's and youth literature .

Live and act

Fröhlich's main job was a trained typesetter who worked in Berlin from 1833 to 1839 and again in 1845 after years of wandering. Following the tradition of the shoemaker Wilhelm Müller from Düsseldorf as a scissor artist, he initially created paper cuttings for children in his free time, for which he also wrote corresponding verses, some in Low German. In 1852 he started his book production with Flowers on the Path . He also worked for various newspapers, including the German Youth and almost forty years for the anthology Herzblättchens Zeitvertreib published by Thekla von Gumpert . According to Kunze, his best achievements include the cheerful ABC book , in which he also addresses his craftsmanship with the letter Z :

Petite, numerous, delicate and nice
Pictures, from A to Z
Should you, children for pleasure,
Willingly submit to the scissors.
Who succeeds in z e b r a fine
That should be S c h e r e n k can.
