Karl Frehsner

Karl Frehsner (born June 13, 1939 in Unterlaussa , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian alpine ski trainer and sports manager. His nickname is "Der Eiserne Karl". Under his care, ski racers won 53 Olympic and World Cup medals.

biography

The son of a wood chopper spent his childhood and youth in the Austrian Laussabachtal . He later moved to Switzerland , where he worked in ski factories and climbed the north face of the Eiger, among other things .

Frehsner was the men's head coach at the Swiss Ski Association for 17 years . At the height of his career in the 1980s, he achieved 35 medals at major events with the national team and racers such as Pirmin Zurbriggen , Peter Müller and Franz Heinzer . The 1987 Alpine World Ski Championships, in particular , were known as the “ Crans-Montana gold rush ”.

After that, from November 29, 1993 Karl Frehsner was a trainer for the Sauber team in Formula 1 , where he was responsible for Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Karl Wendlinger in the physical and mental areas .

In 1997 he moved to Austria and led the women's team of the Austrian Ski Association with racers like Renate Götschl and Alexandra Meissnitzer to success. The team won 18 medals while coaching.

Frehsner is still occasionally available for coaching activities, especially for the Swiss Ski Association. From summer 2008 he trained Tamara Wolf ( 2003 junior world champion in the downhill) to prepare her for the return to the Ski World Cup after numerous injuries . The result was two gold medals at the Universiade in February 2009 and Wolf's return to the Swiss-Ski training group . In May 2009 Frehsner was hired as a consultant in Lara Gut's private team .

Frehsner has lived in Dietikon in the canton of Zurich since 1968 .
