Karlheinz Keppler
Karlheinz Gerhard Michael Keppler (born March 24, 1951 in Berlin ) is a German doctor (prison doctor) and author .
Life and education
Keppler was born the second of seven children. After graduating from the Ernestinum Gymnasium in Celle , he first studied German language and literature, sociology and philosophy with a focus on linguistics and communication at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Cologne . In 1980 he completed his studies with a Magister Artium (MA) exam. This was followed by studying human medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne. In 1986 he received his license to practice medicine. Clinical activities in the fields of internal medicine , surgery , gynecology and obstetrics followed.
Since 1991, Keppler has been working as a prison doctor and civil servant medical director in the penal system of Lower Saxony in general medicine, addiction medicine and as a gynecologist in all areas of the penal system (men’s penal system, women’s penal system, youth penitentiary). He wrote his doctoral thesis at the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg . The topic of the thesis was AIDS and hepatitis viruses: detection of infection and prevalence in incarcerated women .
Keppler is married and has two children.
Services to medicine in the penal system
Keppler is regarded as the most renowned prison doctor in Germany. In addition to scientific publications focusing on addiction, drugs, infectious diseases, prophylaxis / prevention and health promotion, he is the editor of the standard work "Prison Medicine". He was the first doctor in the Lower Saxony penal system to substitute methadone. In addition, the first nationwide syringe exchange program was installed in his prison under his direction. Sterile syringes are given to drug-using prisoners. The reason for this was the avoidance of HIV and hepatitis infections by repeatedly using syringes in custody. He is the initiator of the "Prison Medicine Vintage" that takes place every two years. In addition, he is also internationally recognized as an expert who has so far lectured in Albania, Romania, Moldova and Chile.
