Kate McKinnon Berthold (born January 6, 1984 in Sea Cliff , New York ) is an American actress and comedian .

She belongs to the regular cast of the American comedy show Saturday Night Live and is known for her imitations of Justin Bieber , Ellen DeGeneres , Hillary Clinton , Jeff Sessions and Angela Merkel, among others .

Life

McKinnon was born and raised in Sea Cliff, New York . She is the daughter of Laura Campbell, an educator, and Michael Thomas Berthold († 2002), an architect. She has a younger sister. As a child she played the piano, cello and guitar. She graduated from North Shore High School in New York in 2002 and Columbia University in 2006 , where she also co-founded a comedy group.

From 2006 to 2010 she was part of the cast of The Big Gay Sketch Show . In 2012 she made her debut on Saturday Night Live . She was nominated for “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” for Saturday Night Live at the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards . In 2016 and 2017 she won the award.

In 2016, she starred alongside Kristen Wiig , Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones in the film Ghostbusters , the reboot of the 1984 cult film of the same name . Wiig and Jones were both part of the Saturday Night Live ensemble. In 2017 she starred in Girls' Night Out .

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
