Katia Ricciarelli (born January 16, 1946 in Rovigo ) is an Italian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Katia Ricciarelli had a difficult childhood and youth after the early death of her father. Family members were killed in a traffic accident. Katia Ricciarelli lived with her mother and sister in Rovigo, later in Milano - Corsico. She earned the money for her studies, among other things, by performing in the circus. In Venice she attended the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory as a student of Iris Adami-Corradetti. She won three important singing competitions: 1969 the Aslico competition in Milan, 1970 the RAI ("Voci verdiane") prize and the Parma Concours.

In 1969 she made her debut in Mantua as Mimi in La Bohème and subsequently appeared at the Teatro Regio in Parma as Leonora in Il trovatore and sang Medora in Verdi's Il corsaro at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice . In 1971 she celebrated her first great success at the Opera of Rome in the title role of Verdi's Giovanna d'Arco . In the 1972/73 season she made her debut in America and appeared at the Chicago Opera as Lucretia in I due Foscari and in Los Angeles as Mimi in La Bohème . She also played this role in 1974 when she made her first appearance at the Paris Opera . In 1973 she made a guest appearance at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, in the same year she was signed to La Scala in Milan . She was able to continue her successes at this house too; on her debut she was celebrated as Suor Angelica in Puccini 's opera of the same name .

Since 1974 she sang regularly on the stage of the Covent Garden Opera in London and later, after her debut as Mimi, also appeared there as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera , as the heroine in Luisa Miller , as Elisabetta in Don Carlos , as Aida, as Leonora in Il Trovatore , as Desdemona in Otello , as Alice Ford in Falstaff , as Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor and as Giulietta in Bellini's I Capuleti ed I Montecchi .

In 1975 she came to the Metropolitan Opera New York for the first time , her first role was Mimi in La Bohème . In 1978 she celebrated one of her greatest successes in New York, as Desdemona. During her engagement there, she later took on the roles of Amelia in Un ballo in maschera , Micaela in Carmen and the title role of Luisa Miller

Guest appearances have taken her to most of the world's major opera houses, such as the Vienna State Opera , the Grand Théâtre Geneva , where she sang Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and Mathilde in Rossini's Wilhelm Tell , the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Munich National Theater (including in Il Trovatore , Don Carlos and Rigoletto by Verdi), the Hamburg State Opera (including Otello with Placido Domingo in his role debut), the Teatro Liceo Barcelona and the Opera in New Orleans. In the Arena of Verona she performed in the years 1973, 1978 ( Il Trovatore ), 1979 and 1984 ( I Lombardi alla prima crociata ) on. In 1977 she gave a recital as part of the Salzburg Festival .

In the early 1980s Ricciarelli devoted himself particularly to the work of Rossini . From 1982 onwards she was invited to Pesaro for a few seasons , where she appeared in the notable revivals of the operas Il viaggio a Reims as Madame Cortese and Bianca e Falliero as Bianca, in 1989 as Ninetta in La gazza ladra , as Ellen in La donna del lago and when Amenaide was performing in Tancredi . In 1987 she could be heard in the title role at the performances of Aida in front of the temples of Luxor . At the Bregenz Festival and at the Stuttgart State Opera , she appeared in 1987 as Anna Bolena in the Donizetti Opera and at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples as Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux . In 1988 she was Marguerite in Faust at the Munich National Theater and at the Théâtre Châtelet Paris .

In 1989 she appeared in Versailles as Maddalena in Andrea Chénier , which was given on the occasion of the bicentenary of the French Revolution. In 1990 she was Desdemona in Verdi's Otello at the Metropolitan Opera and at the Covent Garden Opera . In 1991 she appeared in Rome as the title hero in Iphigénie en Tauride by Piccinni , in Reggio Emilia as Maria in Maria Stuarda , at the Grand Théâtre Geneva as Amenaide in Rossini's Tancredi , at the Monte Carlo Opera as Susanna in Il segreto di Susanna , at the Théâtre de la Monnaie Brussels the Elena in Rossini's La donna del lago . In 1993 she was heard at the Teatro Coccia in Novara as Valentine in the Huguenots . In 1996 she appeared as Liu in Turandot at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago and appeared at the Teatro Fraschini in Pavia in the title role of La Cenerentola , and in 1997 she took over the title role of Agrippina in Palermo .

In 1998 she was entrusted with the artistic direction of the Teatro Politeamo Greco in Lecce , where she appeared in 1998 as Fedora in the opera of the same name by Giordano . From 2003 to 2005 she was artistic director of the annual Macerata Opera Festival .

Highlights of her extensive repertoire were the title roles in the Donizetti operas Anna Bolena , Maria de Rudenz and Lucrezia Borgia , the Semiramis in Rossini's opera of the same name, the Giulietta in Bellini's I Capuleti ed i Montecchi and the great soprano roles in the operas by Cherubini, Puccini and Verdi, many of which have been immortalized on records and films.

In the concert hall, too, she demonstrated her skills as one of the most important Italian sopranos of her era, who performed with the most important conductors of her time, such as Claudio Abbado , Colin Davis , Gianandrea Gavazzeni , Carlo Maria Giulini , Herbert von Karajan , Carlos Kleiber , James Levine , Lorin Maazel , Zubin Mehta , Riccardo Muti and Georges Prêtre .

In 1991 she founded the “Accademia Lirica di Katia Ricciarelli”.

In recent years, Katia Ricciarelli has also worked successfully as an actress, for example in La seconda notte de nozze by Pupi Avati in 2005 and in the comedy Bianco e nero by Cristina Comencini in 2008 . In 2006 she also worked on Canale 5 in the reality TV production “La fattoria”.

She lives on her country estate near Spoleto ; from her 40th birthday until 2004 she was married to the television presenter Pippo Baudo .
