The sign of the Kayı

The Kayı were an important Oghuz tribe.

Mahmud al-Kāshgharī mentioned them under the name Kayığ as one of the 24 Oghuz tribes. As a totem animal they had a gyrfalcon . Their tribal name means stable or powerful in Old Turkish .

The Kayı came to Anatolia from Central Asia with the Seljuks in the 11th century . Some groups of the Kayı also settled in the Balkans from the 14th century. Today's Turkish province of Bilecik is considered the nucleus of the Kayı and so the Ottoman dynasty goes back to this clan.
