Kazimierz Deyna (born October 23, 1947 in Starogard Gdański , † September 1, 1989 in San Diego , California , United States ) was a Polish football player . He was nicknamed "Kaka", "General" or just "Kaz".

Career

As a player in the army club Legia Warsaw and the Polish national team , which won Olympic gold in 1972 and third place at the World Cup in Germany in 1974 , Deyna achieved world fame. According to many experts, Deyna was one of the best players in the world and the best midfield director that a Polish national team has ever owned.

His profession was an officer in the Polish military, but Deyna never belonged to political or social organizations. In the Polish national team Kazimierz Deyna played from 1968 to 1978. He made his debut on April 24, 1968 in Chorzów against Turkey (8: 0), his last game he played on June 21, 1978 in Mendoza against Brazil (1: 3) in Course of the XI. World Championship in Argentina . Deyna announced his departure from the circle of Polish representatives after the previously lost game against Argentina when he missed the “most important penalty” of his life. He made a total of 97 international matches and scored 41 goals.

At the end of his career Kazimierz Deyna went to the North American Soccer League for Legends San Diego. He was killed in a traffic accident in California on September 1, 1989: He was driving his old 1974 Dodge Colt from the south towards San Diego and drove at high speed into a Ford F-600 which was in the right-hand lane was standing. Most likely he had fallen asleep behind the wheel because the police couldn't find any skid marks. The front of the car was crushed to the seats, so that he was dead on the spot. It was 1:25 a.m. when he died. The autopsy found multiple injuries as the cause of death . He was identified by his driver's license, which he carried in his pocket. Deyna left behind his wife and son.

Burial places

Deyna was first buried in the El Camino Memorial Park cemetery near San Diego. In June 2012 his remains were transferred to Warsaw and buried in the Powązki Military Cemetery.
