The Kehrbach is a 16 km long man-made canal in southern Lower Austria, which was mentioned as early as the 12th century. It is derived from the Schwarza at the “Peischinger (Land) weir ” in Peisching (below Neunkirchen ) , whereby as a rule all of the water is taken from the Schwarza.
The Kehrbach was originally used to fill the moat of Wiener Neustadt Castle . In the 19th century it was built by the Count Hoyos set up as a canal, on the funeral wood from the area of Rax and Schneeberg Wiener Neustadt getriftet was. This use was discontinued in 1855. In 1916 it became the main supplier of the Wiener Neustädter Canal in the course of the "Kehrbachumlassung" (see Wiener Neustädter Canal ).
Today the Kehrbach carries up to 7,000 liters of water per second on its 16 km long course from Peisching to the northeast edge of Wiener Neustadt, which is taken from the Schwarza. The gradient of over 90 meters is used to operate the EVN power plants in Föhrenwald, Brunnenfeld, Akademie and Ungarfeld. In front of the Ungarfeld power plant, an annual average of another 3,000 l / s are introduced from the Leitha into the Kehrbach via the “Katzelsdorfer supply channel”, most of which come from the Pitten . At the Ungarfeld power plant, at least 1,000 to a maximum of 1,440 l / s are fed from the Kehrbach into the Wiener Neustädter Canal. The water not required for the operation of the canal is fed into the Warme Fischa on the northern edge of Wiener Neustadt (see picture).
