history

The power plant was built on a small reservoir, which was dammed about 6 meters high. The lake was a prerequisite for the power plant, otherwise it would not have been approved. The workers' town of Agidel has been built near the power station . Unit 1 was built from January 1983. In December 1983, construction began on the second block. Blocks 3 and 4 remained in the planning phase. A few years after the start of construction there were environmental measurements. As it was suspected that the power plant could be flooded in the event of flooding, a construction freeze was imposed. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the project was abandoned.

On April 25, 2001 it was announced that the construction of the power plant would be resumed in the near future. The residents of the region are also in favor of building a nuclear power plant. In order for the construction to be approved, the reservoir must be raised from a level of 62 m to 68 m. Around 50,000 hectares of land would be lost in the process.
