Kevin Hofland (born June 7, 1979 in Brunssum ) is a former Dutch football player and current coach . In his active career he played in the Netherlands, Germany, Cyprus and as a Dutch international .
Career
As a player
Childhood, Youth and Beginnings
Kevin Hofland was born in Brunssum as the child of the soccer player Hub Hofland. His first name is a homage to Kevin Keegan , who became German champion with Hamburger SV shortly before Kevin's birth . Hofland is the grandson of a grandmother from Austria ; He learned German early on through his mother . Hofland, whose father was also his youth coach, began playing football at SV Limburgia . From there he went to Fortuna Sittard's youth and changed there in 1997 to the active area. In October 1997 he made his debut in the Eredivisie at the age of 18 . In the following years he was able to secure a regular place in Sittard. Hofland and Sittard took a place in the bottom third in three seasons. His achievements were not hidden from others. PSV Eindhoven , among others, expressed their interest in him.
PSV Eindhoven
Hofland followed the call of the PSV coach at the time, Eric Gerets , and became a regular player for the 2000/01 season. At the end of the season, the Dutch championship was won. At the beginning of the following season they won the Super Cup. Hofland also performed well in the Champions League . He then had offers from Manchester United and AC Milan . In the fall of 2002 he suffered a torn tendon in his left ankle and lost his regular place to Wilfred Bouma during his injury break . During the winter break of the 2003/04 season, Hofland was considering changing clubs. With Tottenham Hotspur and Sampdoria Genua two clubs from abroad had expressed an interest in him; however, there was no change. In the spring of 2004, Guus Hiddink , who had since become Gerets' successor, told Hofland that he was no longer planning with him for the first team.
VfL Wolfsburg
Eric Gerets had meanwhile become a coach at VfL Wolfsburg . This was one of the reasons for Hofland's move to VfL in the 2004/05 season. According to Gerets, Hofland “did not forget” that he had made him a regular at PSV Eindhoven and helped him join the national team. With his move to Wolfsburg, he promised to return to the national team and wanted to help VfL Wolfsburg achieve international success. On August 7, 2004 he made his debut for Wolfsburg at the start of the Bundesliga against Borussia Dortmund in the starting eleven. In the period that followed, he gained a regular place. He played with the club in his first season in midfield - although ninth place in the table in the first season was enough to qualify for the UI Cup - and in the next two seasons to stay relegated.
Feyenoord Rotterdam
Hofland returned to the Netherlands for Feyenoord Rotterdam for the 2007/08 season . In his first season he appeared for Feyenoord in 27 games and scored one goal. With this club he won the Dutch Cup in his first season after beating Roda JC Kerkrade 2-0 in the final . The final was also his only appearance in the cup competition. In the following season he was used in 20 games in which he had marked a goal and prepared one. There were also five appearances in the UEFA Cup . In 2009/10 he lost his regular place and was only used in eight games (one goal).
AEK Larnaka
For the 2010/11 season Hofland was loaned to the Cypriot club AEK Larnaka , where his compatriot Jordi Cruyff was technical director. Hofland won a regular place there. After half a year, the loan relationship was converted into a complete change. At the end of the season there were 22 appearances and five goals in the league game as well as three appearances in the championship round. Hofland only played eleven games the following season due to injury. In that season AEK Larnaka was in the group stage of the Europa League , in which Hofland was used in three games. In 2012 he ended his career because of his injuries.
National team
A short time after he moved to PSV Eindhoven in autumn 2000, Hofland played for the first time in the Dutch senior team . In the period that followed, another five missions were added. At that time he was considered the "coming defensive man". Because of his injury-related absence, which began in autumn 2002, he lost his regular place in Eindhoven and in the national team to Wilfred Bouma . As a result, Dick Advocaat Hofland did not nominate for the Dutch line-up for the 2004 European Championship finals . From his move to VfL Wolfsburg and his return to the Dutch "Elftal", Hofland had hoped for a better chance of participating in the 2006 World Cup . He was brought back to the national team on August 3, 2004 when Advocaat's successor, Marco van Basten , called him up for the friendly on August 18, 2004 in Sweden . He was in the starting eleven against the Swedes and was never substituted; it was his last international match.
As a trainer
On February 15, 2018, he took over the position of assistant coach at Fortuna Sittard.
Career as a functionary
From October 2012 he worked as technical director at his first professional club, Fortuna Sittard.
