Joseph Kevin Keegan OBE (born February 14, 1951 in Armthorpe , Doncaster ) is a former English football player and coach .

Athletic career

Keegan was England's most popular and one of the best football players in the 1970s. The little striker, his career at Scunthorpe United began was affectionately called "Mighty Mouse" and won with Liverpool in 1973 and in 1976 the UEFA Cup and in 1977 the European Champions Cup .

He then moved to the German 1st Bundesliga for Hamburger SV . In Germany , too , he quickly became a popular sportsman during his time at HSV between 1977 and 1980 . He played a major role in the rise of Hamburger SV to one of the defining clubs in Germany in the early 1980s. In his first season 1977/78 they finished only tenth. In 1979 HSV became German champions, with Keegan contributing 17 hits. In 1980 he reached the final of the European Cup with HSV, which was lost to Nottingham Forest 0-1. In addition, HSV was runner-up behind FC Bayern Munich after HSV lost the decisive game 1: 2 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who had been promoted at the time .

In the national team of England his career was not so lucky. As a player, he took part in the 1980 European Championship in Italy , but his team was eliminated in the preliminary round. At the 1982 World Cup in Spain , he was absent mostly due to injury; there was only a brief appearance in the second final round when Keegan came on against the hosts . With the 0-0, England (undefeated) failed to Germany .

Keegan was also unlucky as England coach. At the 2000 European Championships , his team defeated Germany 1-0 in the preliminary round, but were eliminated after two 3-2 defeats against Portugal and Romania, as did Germany after the preliminary round. The first game of the World Cup qualification against Germany at Wembley was also lost 0-1. It was his last game as national coach and the last game in the venerable Wembley Stadium before it was demolished for a new building in the same place .

Keegan coached the Manchester City team in the English Premier League until his temporary retirement from football in March 2005 . After almost three years without a job, Kevin Keegan took over the coaching position for the second time with the "Magpies" of Newcastle United and celebrated his coaching comeback. On September 4, 2008, he resigned as a coach.

Keegan as a singer

Keegan's popularity was also expressed in the fact that during his active time in the Bundesliga, the first name "Kevin" gained increased popularity with German parents; he was also successful as a pop singer. The British singer of the group Smokie , Chris Norman , produced two hits for the German charts with him. The single Head over Heels in Love (with Smokie), number ten in Germany's sales hit parade , also climbed to number 31 in the British charts in 1979 .
