Station forecourt with north main entrance, on the left the path to the Hörn, on the right the bus stops and the transition to Sophienhof.

The station is the starting point for routes to Hamburg , Lübeck , Flensburg and Husum . It is located directly on the Kiel Fjord . The ferry docks to Oslo and Gothenburg are a few hundred meters away.

The Kiel main station is a terminus station . The length of the three-aisled platform hall is 121 meters, the width 55 meters.

The first Kiel train station was built from 1843 to 1846 at Ziegelteich (filled in between 1865 and 1876), around 500 meters north of the current location. It was a two-story building. It was located at the western end of today's Stresemannplatz street and extended into the current building at Andreas-Gayk-Straße 31 (main post office / tourist information). The tracks led along today's Auguste-Victoria-Straße and reached as far as Jensenstraße, which connected Straße Klinke, today Andreas-Gayk-Straße, with Kaistraße and thus led across the present inner courtyard of the main post office.

This station was no longer able to cope with the growing traffic, especially that of an imperial war port , to which Kiel had been declared in 1871. The current location improved the accessibility to the port for road traffic. Construction began in 1895.

The western part of the then four-track terminus station (tracks 3 and 4) was completed in 1899. Until then, trains were still running through a gap in the east wing to the old station. After the opening of the new station, traffic to the old station could be stopped, the east wing (track 1 and 2) followed in 1900. The old station was demolished in 1902. On the east side of the reception building, the imperial staircase was combined with a curved driveway, via which the harbor basin with the pier for the imperial yacht could be reached in the shortest possible way . The final completion of the elongated west wing (tracks 5 and 6) and the platform hall lasted until 1911, as the Kiel city monastery , a poor house on Sophienblatt, had to be demolished first.

On October 2, 1927, the station, which until then was only called "Kiel", was given the name "Kiel Hbf."

In 1944, the main station and the adjoining magnificent buildings were badly damaged in a heavy bomb attack by the Allies. From 1950 the station was rebuilt in a simplified form. A restaurant was built in the eastern part of the reception building so that the imperial staircase could no longer be used as an entrance.

In the 1950s, the area around the station was redesigned. In particular, the Sophienblatt road to the west of the station was greatly widened. For this purpose, the bones of the St. Jürgen cemetery , which was laid out in 1793, were reburied in 1955 and the St. Jürgen church built in 1904 torn down.

Due to the 1972 Summer Olympics , a raised parking deck was built on the north side of the station forecourt, under which the central bus station (ZOB) was located at ground level. The pedestrian connection between the station building and the central bus station via the forecourt was made by means of a covered pedestrian walkway as a light steel construction, which led out of the main entrance arch of the station and led into the stilted, opposite parking level. In the station, various sales pavilions were built on the cross platform and around the entrance hall, and an additional level was added to the historic entrance hall (north entrance) and the adjacent waiting halls, which halved the historical room height. For the Sophienhof shopping center , which was built in 1988 , a footbridge was also laid out from the reception building, which impaired the architecture of the building. There are also two closed pedestrian walkways on the outside of the train station to the left and right of the entrance hall in the north, which the people of Kiel jokingly called "BH" because of their appearance.

The CAP adventure center with several restaurants and a large cinema was built in 1994/1995 on the east side facing the harbor . It has direct access at platform height from the easternmost platform. The Cap received its second renovation in 2010 - essentially another change in the passage and the entrance areas while maintaining the localities, including a bowling alley and a discotheque for several years.

In 1995 the railway line towards Hamburg was electrified . Since then, ICE trains have also started and ended here every day .

Since the station renovation in 1999

In 1999 a comprehensive renovation of the station began. Among other things, it received a new reception hall. The mezzanine level of the historic entrance hall has been removed and the former ceiling height has been restored. The pedestrian walkway to the central bus station and the outer walkways on the north side of the station have been demolished without replacement, the walkway to the Sophienhof has been replaced by a steel and glass construction. The redesigned station forecourt and the reception hall on the cross platform with numerous shops were inaugurated for the Kiel Week in June 2004. The imperial staircase in the east was also restored. The renovation was interrupted several times due to financial and technical difficulties and was only completed in May 2006 with the completion of a new platform hall; only above the cross platform is the old and renovated station hall still preserved. The total cost of the renovation was around 60 million euros. The cost of the platform hall was put at around 30 million euros. The parking deck with the central bus station underneath it until 2016 was reduced by almost a third (partial demolition) in the south - towards the train station - in 2009-2010 and a hotel of the "Atlantic" chain was built there (opening June 2010 / construction costs around 23 million euros). Euro).

Hotel "Atlantic" opposite the main train station

From 2013, there was another renovation of the station with the creation of tracks 2b and 6b. Track 2b was realized outside the hall on the platform of tracks 1 and 2, which was converted into a tongue platform ; The same applies to track 6b on the platform of tracks 5 and 6. The platforms were necessary to cope with the additional traffic on the Kiel – Rendsburg and Kiel – Schönberger Strand routes. The work was largely completed in October 2014.

In 2016, the parking deck above the central bus station, which was once connected to the train station, was demolished to make way for the following new buildings: a new, narrower multi-storey car park facing Stresemannplatz, a new central bus station on Viktoriastraße and another hotel belonging to the Atlantic chain on Kaistraße, located in at right angles to the existing building.
