In 1881, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway extended its tracks through central Texas and bought 360 acres of land a few miles southwest of a small community called Palo Alto that had existed since about 1872. The railroad built a small town there and named it after Frank P. Killeen, the deputy general manager of the railroad. On October 16, 1991, the Killeen rampage took place, in which 24 people were killed.

Demographics
According to the United States Census 2000 , 86,911 residents lived in 32,447 households and 22,972 families. The population consisted of 45.78% white, 33.49% black and 4.33% Asian. Hispanics or Latinos made up 17.80% of the population. The per capita income was $ 15,323 and 11.2% of families and 12.9% of the population were below the poverty line .
In 2014, Killeen had the highest percentage of veterans in the US at 28.9% of the population.
