United States Census 1940
The 1940 United States Census was the sixteenth census in the United States since 1790 . As a result of the census, a population of 132,164,569 people was determined for the USA as of April 1, 1940 (the census was carried out in the entire April), about 7.3% more than at the 1930 census .
The data contain information on the name, address, relationship with the head of the family, gender, race, age, civil status (and if married, age at the first marriage), place of birth and that of the parents, school attendance, educational qualification, reading and language skills (the latter for Immigrants), occupation and industry as well as weekly working hours or length of unemployment and annual income.
The household was asked whether it was a farm or a house, property (then the value was also determined) or a rented apartment (then the rent was recorded); also whether there was a radio in the household.
The data have been available since 2012 because, according to Title 13 of the federal legislation, the data are made available to the public after 72 years.
The state population figures from the 10-year United States censuses are key to determining the number of representatives from those states in the United States House of Representatives . The adjustment is usually made in the next but one Congress after a census.
