Kimbra (born March 27, 1990 in Hamilton ; full name Kimbra Lee Johnson ) is a New Zealand singer-songwriter . Stylistically her songs vary from soul to alternative rock to jazz .

Life

Kimbra was born in Hamilton, New Zealand, and spent much of her childhood there. She attended Hillcrest High School, where she took second place in the renowned New Zealand school band competition Smokefreerockquest in 2004. Kimbra wrote her first songs when she was ten, and her father Ken gave her a guitar when she was twelve. She made her first music video, Smile , on the children's television show What Now? of the television channel Juice TV and received the award for the best newcomer video. After the release of the second single Simply on My Lips (2007), the Australian producer Mark Richardson from the newly founded label Forum 5 in Melbourne became her manager. From him, Kimbra borrowed her first looper , which she experimented with on her live shows and in the studio. When the song Settle Down was published in 2010, the American celebrity blogger Perez Hilton wrote : “If you like Nina Simone , Florence and the Machine and / or Björk , then we think you will enjoy Kimbra - her music reminds us of all those fierce ladies! "German:" If you like Nina Simone, Florence and the Machine and / or Björk, then we think you will like Kimbra - their music reminds us of all these passionate ladies! "

On June 7, 2011, Kimbra signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records New Zealand with the option of worldwide distribution of their singles and albums through the Warner Music Group .

In July 2011 she recorded the song Somebody That I Used to Know with the Australian multi-instrumentalist Gotye , reaching number 1 in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, Austria and in several other European countries. Her debut album Vows was released in New Zealand at the end of August 2011 , in Australia at the beginning of September and in Germany in July 2012.

In September 2016, Kimbra was a guest singer at a live concert by The Revolution , Prince's former backing band .
