Klaus-Jürgen Thäter

Klaus-Jürgen Thäter (born June 27, 1925 in Kiel ; † October 27, 2000 ) was a German naval officer , most recently as Rear Admiral in the German Navy .

World War II and post-war period

Born in Kiel as the son of an army officer, Thäter joined the Navy as an officer candidate on June 1, 1942, before his 17th birthday . He served as an officer on watch on a submarine and was seriously wounded in an air raid.

After the end of the Second World War , the perpetrator volunteered as a courier for the defense of the Grand Admirals Raeder and Dönitz, who were accused in the Nuremberg trials , and transported files and documents from Hamburg to Nuremberg .

He later worked briefly in the transportation industry before signing up for service in the Labor Service Unit (B) , a United States Navy support organization in Germany. Here he was deployed on minesweepers looking for World War II mines in German waters of the North and Baltic Seas .

Service in the German Navy

In 1956, Thäter joined the newly founded German Navy, became commander of a speedboat and, in the fall of 1959, provisional commander of the 1st Schnellbootgeschwader and the 5th Schnellbootgeschwader. During this time he was promoted to corvette captain. After participating in the 3rd admiral staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg from October 1961 to September 1963, he became first officer of a destroyer and later commander of the 3rd Schnellbootgeschwader, which he led from October 1966 to September 1968. This was followed by activities in the naval command and in the NATO Baltic Sea Access Command in Karup , Denmark .

In October 1975 Thäter became captain of the Schnellbootflotille as captain at sea . Subsequently, in October 1975 he took over command of the destroyer flotilla as flotilla admiral until October 1978 and became the only officer who led two of the German navy's flotillas one after the other.

From October 1979 to October 1982 Thäter was in command of the naval forces in the North Sea . He then served until his retirement in 1985 as Chief of Staff of the NATO Command Northern Europe ( Allied Forces Northern Europe ) in Kolsås, Norway . After his retirement, Thäter lived with his wife in Kiel-Schilksee .
