Klaus Schippmann

Klaus Schippmann (born October 30, 1924 in Kiel , † September 8, 2010 in Göttingen ) was a German archaeologist from the Near East .

Klaus Schippmann first studied law and economics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the University of Hamburg and passed the first state examination in 1951. A legal clerkship followed by 1953 and stays abroad in France and England until 1955, in 1955 thanks to a scholarship in the USA. In 1956 he passed his assessor examination in Hamburg and in 1957 his doctorate with a dissertation on the subject of "Legal protection in institutional relationships ". He then worked for two years as a personnel manager in the paper industry.

In 1959/1960 Schippmann traveled to Turkey and Iran for nine months to take up Armenian churches and rock shrines. In the following year he began a second degree in Near Eastern Archeology in Hamburg. 1969 habilitation Schippmann with the work "The Iranian fire temples" at the Georg-August-University of Goettingen , followed by 1972, a lectureship joined. In 1972 he became the first professor at the newly created chair for "Near Eastern Archeology with special attention to Iran" in Göttingen, which was initiated by Walther Hinz . In 1990 he retired.

Klaus Schippmann was an internationally respected expert on Iranian and Old South Arabian archeology and history, his book The Iranian Fire Sanctuaries is considered a standard work. From 1985 to 1990 he directed excavations in Ra's al-Khaimah , and from 1992 to 1994 in Bahrain .
