Knüllwald is located in the Knüllgebirge between the rivers Efze and Beise south of Kassel . With a community area of ​​10,053 hectares, over 60% of which is forested, Knüllwald occupies one of the top places among the largest municipalities in Hesse.

Neighboring communities

Knüllwald borders in the north on the municipality of Malsfeld , in the east on the municipalities of Morschen (both in the Schwalm-Eder district), Alheim and Ludwigsau , in the south on the municipality of Neuenstein (all three in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg ) and the city of Schwarzenborn , as well in the west to the town of Homberg (Efze) (both in the Schwalm-Eder district).

history

The formation of the large municipality of Knüllwald as part of the regional reform in Hesse took place in two stages. On December 31, 1971, the communities of Appenfeld, Ellingshausen, Hergetsfeld, Oberbeisheim, Reddingshausen, Remsfeld, Schellbach, Völkershain and Wallenstein voluntarily merged to form the new community of Knüllwald.

On January 1, 1974, the municipalities of Berndshausen , Niederbeisheim and Rengshausen became part of the greater municipality of Knüllwald by state law. This created one of the largest municipalities in Hesse. Local districts were set up for all formerly independent municipalities .
